Early Families in Bridgeport, Texas
W. T. Jarnagin

William Temple and Emma Wilson Jarnagin moved to Bridgeport from Bryson, Texas in 1917. They moved to their property so they could be located near a school so the children could easily walk to the building. The twelve Jarnagin children that grew up in Bridgeport were Earl, Mamie, Nancy, Oscar, Esther, Hattie. Georgia, Temple, Ardath, Irma, Leola, and Russell.

The Jarnagin children told stories of dramatic acting while picking black-eyed peas, courageous rescues from drowning in the creek, and a game of jumping from the roof of the barn" Papa" built. Ardath and her husbands, Oliver Bowden and after he died, Hershal Allen, continued to live on the Jarnagin farm/property on Route 1, in Bridgeport until the 1990's and hosted many family visitors there.

The Jarnagin's descend from Captain Thomas Jarnagin from Virginia who settled in Mt. Harmony, Tennessee on land he was awarded for service during the Revolutionary War. The majority (six) of the Jarnagin children (Mamie, Esther, Hattye, Georgia, Temple and Russell) settled in the Texas Panhandle. The Jarnagin cousin's reunion takes place annually at the Oldham, Texas County Courthouse during the Oldham County Roundup the second weekend in August.
